How difficult is it for religious people to understand that not all non-religious people hate religion?
I spent 20 minutes in my Intro to Ethics discussion arguing with a Catholic girl that while it is possible to formulate moral principles from a basis other than religion, if you choose to adopt a spiritual belief system as your own personal basis for what you think is right and wrong, then that’s fine too.
And she got so mad. She pretty much spat at me:
Catholic girl: How can you think that about religions if you’re an ATHEIST?
(I hadn’t said anything about whether or not I was religious.)
Me: I have no problem with religion. If believing in a higher power can help you to become a kinder, better person, then why would I take that away from you? I just feel no personal need to attribute my beliefs about the world and the people in it to a god.
Catholic girl: But how can you like people who are religious if YOU aren’t? Don’t all religious people just seem like idiots to you?
Me: Are you trying to say that I should think you’re an idiot?THAT shut her up real quick.
